As football clubs ramp up their pre-season preparations, Hibs took on the mighty Ajax in a friendly match, and well, they got more than they bargained for. With a promising third-place finish last season, Hibs boss David Gray was looking for a stern test, and Ajax delivered just that. The game took place behind closed doors at the Toekomst sports complex in Holland.
Despite Hibs lining up with a strong team, including players like Bushiri and Boyle, it was Ajax who stole the show. The Dutch squad, featuring stars like Berghuis and Brobbey, netted five goals in the first half alone. Hibs fans, tuning in through Ajax's app, had to watch their team struggle against this high-caliber opposition.
Ajax's dominance was clear from the start. Within eight minutes, Steven Berghuis had already hit the back of the net, and it wasn't long before the goals began to flow. Despite Hibs' efforts, with Boyle scoring in the 16th minute, Ajax's attack, including a double from Mika Godst, proved relentless. Kian Fitz Jim added insult to injury, making it 5-1 before halftime.
In the second half, Ajax made wholesale changes to their lineup, and despite the fresh legs, Hibs fought back. Although Ajax's Ahmetcan Caplan stretched their lead further, Hibs found a glimmer of hope. Junior Hoilett's shot found the net, followed by a late surge from Kieron Bowie, which brought some respectability to the scoreline. This match might've been a wake-up call, but it's all part of the preparation process for their upcoming Europa League qualifier against FC Mijdjytlland.
