As part of the 'Summer Series Upper Austria' at Linz's Raiffeisen Arena, the Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray Istanbul took on Austria's second-division runner-up, FC Admira Wacker, in a thrilling matchup. The friendly, attended largely by a passionate Turkish fanbase, saw Galatasaray assert their dominance with a 2-1 win. The event also featured entertainment by Eko Fresh and culinary delights from a kebab stand.
The first half clearly belonged to Galatasaray, who have more time until their official season kick-off on August 8. They were relentless from the get-go, with Derrick Köhn netting the opener after a clever assist from Yunus Akgün in just the 10th minute. Though Nicolò Zaniolo, Lucas Torreira, Gabriel Sara, and Eyüp Aydin missed further chances, Admira Wacker’s defense, led by keeper Clemens Steinbauer, held firm going into halftime.
In the second half, Galatasaray kept up the pressure, with Derrick Köhn coming close again before Arda Ünyay headed in the second goal off a cross from Yusuf Demir. FC Admira Wacker responded instantly, with Alexander Schmidt striking back for them less than two minutes later, keeping the match intense and competitive. Despite numerous substitutions, the energy remained high, with Admira Wacker threatening a comeback.
Although Admira Wacker showed spirit and fought valiantly, Galatasaray maintained their edge. In the waning moments, a shot from Admira’s Manuel Holzmann clanged off the post, denying them the equalizer. With the final whistle, Galatasaray emerged victorious 2-1, adding another notch in their pre-season belt. The turnout was impressive, with 7,800 fans energizing the stands, creating an electric atmosphere reminiscent of a full-fledged home game thanks to Galatasaray's fervent supporters.
